Vacuum
In HVAC terms, a vacuum refers to a pressure that is lower than the atmospheric pressure, typically created when air or other gases are removed from a system. In refrigeration and HVAC systems, a vacuum is often measured in inches of mercury (“Hg”). While it is impossible to achieve a perfect vacuum, a perfect vacuum is theoretically defined as 0 pressure or 30 inches of mercury in a vacuum gauge. Creating a vacuum is essential during the installation or servicing of HVAC systems to remove moisture and air from the refrigerant lines, which can otherwise damage the system or impact efficiency.
