Refrigerant
A refrigerant is a special chemical compound used in HVAC systems to transfer heat. It cycles between liquid and gas states as it absorbs heat from inside a space and releases it outside, enabling cooling or heating. In the past, R-22 refrigerant was commonly used in residential air conditioning systems, but due to its harmful effects on the ozone layer, its production was phased out starting in 2020 under global agreements like the Montreal Protocol. Modern systems now use more environmentally friendly refrigerants like R-410A.
