Ultraviolet
Ultraviolet (UV) air treatment devices use ultraviolet light to kill or neutralize microorganisms, such as bacteria, viruses, and mold, as they pass through a building’s ductwork or air handling system. Some UV systems can also help reduce airborne odors and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These devices are often used as a supplementary air purification step after media air cleaners in indoor air treatment systems. UV air treatment is most effective when paired with variable-speed HVAC systems with constant fan operation, as this ensures continuous air circulation and exposure to the UV light. Many UV air treatment products are designed and certified to meet high medical and safety standards, such as the CLASS II Medical Rating.
