Capacity

« Back to Glossary Index

The amount of heating or cooling an HVAC system can produce to maintain comfortable temperatures inside a building. It’s typically measured in BTUs per hour (British Thermal Units per hour), which is a standard unit of energy used in HVAC systems. For instance, in cooling mode, capacity indicates how much heat the system can remove from the air inside your home every hour. Similarly, in heating mode, it defines how much heat the system can supply to your space within an hour. A higher BTU rating means the system can handle larger spaces or more demanding temperature needs. Capacity is crucial for determining if an HVAC unit is appropriately sized for a particular space—undersized systems may struggle to maintain comfort, while oversized systems can waste energy and lead to other issues like short-cycling.
