MERV
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, which is a system used to measure how effectively an air filter can capture particles of different sizes from the air that passes through it. Filters with higher MERV ratings can trap smaller particles, like dust, pollen, mold spores, and even bacteria, but they may also restrict airflow more. This increased resistance can make HVAC systems work harder, potentially reducing energy efficiency and requiring more frequent filter replacements. For most residential systems, a MERV rating of around 8 provides a good balance between capturing common contaminants and maintaining proper airflow without overburdening the equipment.
