Accumulator

« Back to Glossary Index

An accumulator is a component commonly found in HVAC systems, especially in systems using heat pumps and air conditioners. It is a storage tank located between the evaporator and the compressor. Its primary purpose is to protect the compressor from liquid refrigerant. Instead of storing “excess refrigerant vapor” as mentioned in the provided definition, the accumulator actually prevents liquid refrigerant from entering the compressor, which could cause damage (a problem known as “compressor slugging”). The accumulator temporarily holds the liquid refrigerant and allows only vaporized refrigerant to pass through to the compressor. Additionally, it contains desiccants to remove moisture from the system and may also include oil return mechanisms to ensure proper lubrication of the compressor.
